If you decide to tackle this yourself, may I suggest instead writing a
bit of Java to direct the necessary DSpace admin. classes and let
DSpace take care of the details of clanking the database.  It's
probably less work than making certain that a DB procedure is
observing all of the necessary integrity rules, and it should be more
isolated from future changes in the schema and so should remain useful
to others over time.
