Robert, One alternative that works well for us is the ItemImport program. On the DSpace server create a directory with the large content file, a contents file listing the name of that file, and a simple XML file (dublin_core.xml) with the metadata. See section 7.4.4 of the DSpace 1.4.1 beta 1 System Documentation.
