I'm looking at the release notes for 8.3: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/release-8-3.html Specifically, "Non-character data types are no longer automatically cast to TEXT" so the issue is that we're passing an integer to a operator / function that's expecting text (looks like a simple equality test) and it's no longer being automatically cast.
