We have 2 production instances of DSpace:

1. new site - DSpace 1.4.2 / PostgreSQL 8.2 - database was built with
UTF-8 encoding

2. old site - DSpace 1.2.2 / PostgreSQL 7.3.4 - database was built with
UNICODE encoding

We are trying to shut down the old site and have been exporting all the
documents out of it and importing them into the new one. Unfortunately we have
been having problems with the Import failing on numerous records. After much
research, I finally figured out why these records were failing: special
characters in the metadata in the XML files, especially in Author names such as:

            <dcvalue element="contributor" qualifier="author">CarreƱo, John
A.</dcvalue> (note the special character over the "n" in the author's last
name)

What can we do about this? Is there a simple solution to this problem??

Thanks,

Sue
