This is the canonical and correct way to do it. Do anything else at
your own risk!

It is, however, possible to play games inside a theme by introspecting
in the DRI to figure out which page you're on. I have found this very
useful for adding special bits to (for example) collection or
community home pages (as opposed to browse or search or item pages). I
talk about how I did it at

and I don't *think* anything has changed in Manakin since I did so
that would make the approach obsolete. (There are, however, a few
details in the post itself that are outdated. Verbum sapienti.)
