Hi Jessica,

an item belongs to one collection (owning_collection in item table) and 
can be mapped to others. At the moment there is no out of the box way to 
do this mapping during ingest. It is quite easy to write a script to map 
items to other collections and run this as a cron job.

Another possibility (depending on your exact use case) is the use of the 
configurable browse (1.5 >) to allow different views/aggregations of 
data. E. g. you got the publication type (thesis, report, article etc) 
as a metadata for items and configure it as browsable. Then similar to 
subject you got a browse by type.
