Per default everything gets anonymous read. An item derives it rights during submission from the DEFAULT_ITEM_READ and DEFAULT_BITSTREAM_READ of the collection. Unless you did not change these on collections basis to other than anonymous read or changed the rights later manually you got the default and proper behavior at the moment. Best read at least the basic parts of the DSpace documentation it's all explained there.
