I am considering adding books to my DSpace Digital Library (DL) prototype.
It occurs to me that maybe DSpace is actually much more geared to journals
than to books. It is natural to browse by community when browsing journals
because the communities can be named after the society and journal names.
The actual issues would then correspond to collections and the articles
would correspond to items. But this kind of organisation is not natural for
books, IMO. I think it is more natural to browse books by hierarchical
subject. So, for example, if I wanted to look at the books connected with
crystallography then I might start with science, then drill down to
chemistry, then to crystallography. How can this be done in DSpace please?
Can it be done?

Basically I would like the homepage of my DL to contain a link for journals
and a link for books. The journal link would take you to a list of
societies. This would be a list of the top-level communities. But for books
I want the browse to be by subject. I don't think this can be made to work
except by the obvious kludge of creating communities that are named after
subjects. Is that how it is supposed to be done? If so then it would not be
consistent with the separate subject browsing that DSpace has.
