I have been trying to get a theme together for journals. I have looked at
the Periodicals theme from TDL as a starting point (thanks to the TDL guys
for helping me there). It gives me the kind of organisation that I want,
namely by volume and issue, but at a cost. I have to add some metadata to
the introductory text of the collection. This metadata basically describes
the items in the collection. This means that whenever an item is added to
the collection this metadata needs to be amended. This is tedious and error
prone.

I was thinking, if only the theme could ask the collection about the
metadata for the items in the collection it would be problem solved. I am
also using another digital library which uses MarkLogic. This system can
invoke XQuery queries on the metadata held in MarkLogic whilst doing the
HTML rendering. This query facility enables the same sort of display to be
built easily without having to worry about it becoming out of date as new
items are added.

Is there any way this sort of functionality might be added to DSpace? If so
I realise that it is non-trivial and would be some time away. I just wonder
if it might be considered and/or planned.
