I have heard that publishers like to have articles available as both HTML
and PDF, where the HTML is rendered using from a version of the document
they have as metadata. I wonder what scope there is to do this in DSpace. I
realise that that there is a problem in that we will probably never get
agreement as to what the metadata format/schema will be. But this needn't be
a blocker. Here is one way it could be done: Add provision in DSpace to
store the metadata in a file in the binary asset repository. Add the ability
to retrieve that metadata and perform XQuerys on it from the DRI/XSL
templates. There could be a placeholder added to where the dublin core stuff
is that gets populated by the contents of this metadata file. This would
enable the data to be interrogated by the DRI/XSL stuff just like the
existing metadata can.

Rendering the document as HTML as well as having the PDF would enable a
DSpace website to really distinguish itself from other DSpace sites. What do
people think of this?
