Hi,

In the near future we intend to merge four of our campus-based DSpace
repositories into one university-wide (DSpace) repository. One of the major
questions bothering me is how we can get the Handle.net permalinks already
issued by the campus repositories for their content to resolve gracefully
towards the new union repository.

It seems to be possible to import items from one DSpace to another and have
them retain the original Handle-derived prefix/item numbering pair. I think
I managed to do this by NOT cleaning up the metadata with the dspace_migrate
script before ingesting. If you could retain the prefix/item numbering
maybe then you *could* just have the handle reconfigured by CRNI
to point towards the new repository's IP address and it would resolve the
link just fine. Of course there is also the question whether there can be
four individual handle servers (one for each prefix) on the same server
simultaneously.

Does anyone have any experience or insight to share on this matter?

Thanks,

T
