We have changed the default sort ortder to descending dates. This was
done by defining the following in dspace.cfg:

webui.browse.index.1 = dateissued:item:dateissued:desc
# Am not sure if the next line has any effect on this, but give it a try
webui.itemlist.sort-option.2 = dateissued:dc.date.issued:date
