How many items/authors do you have in the database?  And what sort of 
load times are you seeing?

The browse in 1.4.2 did "by author" by using a SELECT DISTINCT query 
over a potentially very large table, which can result in extreme poor 
performance in generating the user interface.  As the number of authors 
scaled by the number of items becomes large, this process becomes very 
slow indeed, especially if there are author names which appear on 
multiple items.

This was the main reason for replacing the browse system in v1.5, which 
is considerably more scalable.  If you can, you should upgrade to the 
latest version of DSpace, which will eliminate this problem.
