Hi Susan, For the record, we are experiencing the same issue with 1.5.0 with tif files (using JPEGFilter with Java Advanced Imaging installed).
Ie: the same exceptions thrown in mediafilter AND the same issue with thumbnails and preview images not showing up until logging in. I notice that on adding anonymous read permissions to the thumbnail and preview bitstreams, I no longer need to to log in to view them. I'm not sure why they aren't anonymous read by default though - do the thumbnails and preview bitstreams simply inherit the main item bitstream read properties, so that if login is required to view the item bitstream(s), then login is required to veiw thumbnails/preview images? I'll be interested to see people's views on this one, as this is only one of the many exceptions we have thrown by the media filter.
