From my understanding, the assetstore has all the resource objects, such as pdf files, and the database has all the tracking objects, such as metadata and access control and in there are the ideas of communities and collections. Look for the file db-schema.gif in the DSpace source distribution for a layout of the database contents. If you don't have a root cause explanation for the unexpected behaviour, the `do-over' and recreate may carry the problem over. Another way would be to clone the broken system, experiment and address the fault there and then fix the actual system.
