Hi, Fang, If it is the first time you setup dspace, your first important decision in customization is to decide using the xmlui or the jspui. The xmlui is more modular in design but harder to customize. The jspui is very flexible with minimum restrictions. Some cocoon gurus may disagree but ... forget it.
Do the easy things first: changing the banners, footers, frontpage news, fonts, etc. Study the dspace.cfg in depth. Many configurations there can affect the look of the ui. To step in further, you need some good java programmers to customize the source codes. I my opinion, customizing the UI is not on the top priority in the initial stage of running dspace. You should first focus on developing a good set of policies and procedures about WHO can and should do WHAT in the dspace system, and then think about HOW to enforce these rules. dspace's default rules may not fit everyone.
