Hello,

I am completely stuck with this issue!

We have DSpace 1.4.2 running with german localization in place. We have made
pretty few modifications.

Since two month, two of our users complain that, while entering items to their
collections, DSpace does not accept data in one particular Metadata field. We
can reproduce this persistently on their client machines. We cant reproduce it
at all on some other machines.

When jumping to the next page in the browser and coming back immediately, using
the buttons on the end of the page, all fields that were filled with data show
their respective values with the exception of dc.identifier.other.

They can publish the item with the data as is and add the dc.identifier.other
field later on. This test was done while investigating the issue. We were able
to see the row appear as expected in the metadatavalue database table while
adding the field. This procedure cannot be seen as a permanent solution,
because it is error-prone and tedious.

Obviously, we checked their machines. They are using Firefox 3.6 on Windows XP.
But the same thing happens when using Internet Explorer. We checked that
JavaScript is enabled, Caches and Cookies are cleared and started the Browser
in Safe mode. Nothing changed. The machines that are doing fine are Macs with
Firefox 3.6. There are other users using Windows, but we did not ask whether
they enter local signatures which go into this field, so we dont know whether
all Windows clients exhibit this behaviour.

I cant think of any special setting in the collections of the users in
questions. They work in at least three separate collections. I have checked the
values in their Metadata Templates. These templates dont contain a field
associated with dc.identifier.other.

Then, we went through our input-forms.xml and Messages_de.properties including
loading them into a texteditor that displays invisibles such as tabs and other
whitespaces to make sure, we dont encounter some obscure parsing problem. We
dont have localized JSPs under jsp/local/submit besides initial-questions.jsp
and choose-file.jsp. In initial-questions, we removed the nowrap attribute
because localized texts are too long and in choose-file we commented out a link.

What to do next?

Thanks for reading and braining (intended germanism),

Christian Völker
