During our last DSpace Survey (for DSpace 1.6) we did gather a list of new features desired for DSpace. The survey results at that time came up with three main desired features, all of which have been added to DSpace 1.6.0: 1. Better Statistics 2. Embargo facility 3. Batch metadata editing Stuart Lewis had a nice blog entry on this past survey's results: http://blog.stuartlewis.com/2009/05/05/dspace-16-survey-results/ We will be performing more surveys in the future, especially as we start developing DSpace 1.7 (and beyond). You can also request any feature by adding a Feature Request to our DSpace Bug/Feature Tracking System (JIRA): http://jira.dspace.org/ Keep in mind that all of our DSpace developers are *volunteers*. Although we try to respond to or implement features in a timely fashion, a new feature is more likely to happen if you can help us to locate one or more developers who are interested in building that feature. Sometimes interested developers may volunteer once they see a feature request in our DSpace Tracking system (JIRA) -- but other times it can take a while to find someone with the time to implement a new feature. > secondly, the controlled vocabulary module that is made available in > dspace 1.6 package, is not mature one. > if i want to use my own vocabulary, then how i will do it ? Do you mean the new Authority Control module, which helps to control the input of Author names and Publishers? This Authority Control module currently only has a few out-of-the-box plugins -- for Name authority control (using Library of Congress Name Authority files or the local DSpace Database of author names) and Publisher authority control (using SHERPA ROMEO). We are hoping that other interested developers will help us to build even more Authority Control plugins which can help us make this even more useful to everyone in the DSpace Community. More information on this new 1.6.0 Authority Control Module (and building plugins) is available on our Wiki at: http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Authority_Control_of_Metadata_Values Again, if you have plugins you'd like to see -- let us know by adding a feature request in DSpace JIRA, and perhaps helping us to find a volunteer developer to help out. > have you come across any searching deficiency depicted by community > during the recent survey? The most recent survey did not come across much in terms of searching deficiencies or needs. However, I know that a few of our volunteer developers have already begun thinking about improving the DSpace search interface by using faceted browse/searching tools like Apache Solr (http://lucene.apache.org/solr/). However, this work is in the very early stages. I hope this is helpful. - Tim ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Download Intel® Parallel Studio Eval Try the new software tools for yourself.
