Susan, I will add that the original funded 2.0 development cycle ended last year at about the same time as the DSpace / Fedora / Mulgara organizational merger. As someone who actually works on the the code-base from outside the scope of that organization. I can only speak for the intentions of myself and @mire at this point. And our position is that every effort should be made to assure that work done in the 2.0 funded stream be made available to existing DSpace installations by back-porting the work into the DSpace 1.x release process when it is most feasible. And that this should be done incrementally in an attempt to assure three important aspects of our community:
1.) There is a clear maintenance path of migration for existing DSpace installations. 2.) There are opportunities for participating institutions to get their own contributions into the mix. 3.) There is open and healthy interaction between the DSpace and larger Duraspace communities to assist the developer community in charting the appropriate course of development. I think the future success of the DSpace and DuraSpace communities sits upon the above three principles. Work in 1.6.0 has already achieved a giant step in this direction by the porting of the dspace-services framework (simplest definition: Spring support for DSpace). In continuing to actively promote this, the community is preparing an announcement for our GSoC 2010 finalists and an overview of their very interesting projects that we think will align with these principles.
