Hello Iola,

yes this is possible. (the bug http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-596 
only applies to 1.6.1 and above).

All the content (subcommunities, collections, items, templates and 
associated resource policies) will be deleted.

Some things might remain to be cleared up manually. Input forms 
associated with collections which were deleted or adjusted display with 
webui.itemdisplay.<style>.collections in the dspace.cfg.
