i do the backup in this fashion
first i take the dump
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/pg_dump dspace > dspace.sql
i airchive the assetstore directory
on the new machine i first resotre the dump by using this commnad
/usr/local/psql/bin/psql -f dspace.sql dspace -h ipaddress
as mention on this webiste
