Hello Susan,

one can upgrade in one step skipping several versions, we've done so
from 1.4.2 to 1.6.1.

It is basically following the latest upgrade instructions and run all
the major release database update scripts in the correct order. Just
make sure:

- you got a proper backup of everything
- you got the prerequisites ready
pay attention to new versions, e.g. changing the database version
might affect the way you upgrade
- you got all things properly configured, over several versions there
will be a lot of configuration changes
- you got to run all the database upgrade steps in your case
   database_schema_15-16.sql and database_schema_16-17.sql
- you got your prior customizations integrated and all the other stuff
scripts uptodate

If you got some customizations you might consider using your own version
management, it helps running and upgrading a customized instance.

Hope that helps

Claudia Jürgen
