I don't have an answer for you but we may be encountering something similar
- clicking the statistics link makes DSpace wait for ages only to hand out
the following error:
Proxy Error
The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET
/handle/10138/61/statistics.
Reason: Error reading from remote server
Is this similar to what you are getting? How big exactly is your solr index?
Ours is around 2.3G
Also, we're not running Tomcat but a Jetty servlet container instead.
