All DSpace themes are editable. I suspect that your changes aren't
visible because you changed the file in the wrong directory. How is your
tomcat set up -- do its webapps live in
/home/dspace/dspace1.7installDir/webapps/ ? If not (which is suspect is
the case), you'll need to copy these files over to tomcat's webapps
directory.

Please also note that it's not recommended to change files in the
install directory, since they'll be overwritten with the DSpace defaults
if/when you rebuild DSpace.
