Tim,

I want to report that we successfully turned off stemming on our test
server by commenting out line that calls the Porter Stemming Filter.
Thanks for your help!

I can now search for "well", "wells", "wellness" specifically or get
them all (and then some) with well*, or just search (well OR wells) to
get the plural and singular. It's nice to have control again at the user
search interface!

Stuart,

I'm not sure if you are referring to complications in the upper to lower
case filtering algorithm or in searching. In either case, I did not mean
to be comprehensive, but simply to raise the issue. I have used
commercial search systems that provided the capital A 'feature.' I also
know that some large SciTech systems do not include 'a' in the stop word
list. We took 'a' and 'was' out of our test server just for fun. On our
production server I may use a very meager stop word list based on the
old 'Dialog' list, which did not include the word 'a'.

I realize there are complexities, so I'm not trying to be glib.

I do strongly recommend that the stemming option be configurable. I
don't expect everyone to see things my way, but neither do I want to be
limited in what I do when it's unnecessary. I vote for making it a
configuration option and if it's enabled by default, that would be okay.

Richard
