Dear Matthias, did you check the HTML source code of the page? Are the characters really not encoded, because I checked with our DSpace (1.4.2) and at least Firefox and Chrome do not display what is written in the source code, but the translated human readable characters. Lately only IE 8 seams to display the encoded characters in the address field of the browser the way they are encoded in the source code.
So, if the characters are correctly encoded the question is did you a) (re)index your content prior to searching and b) did you set up the tomcat connector to use UTF-8 and c) in addition, if you are using the search has the page the correct character encoding so your forms are correctly encoded for submission (<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"/>).
