1) There are a number of Dspace installation with that characteristic:
 Have a look at
   http://images.swinburne.edu.au/

a more comprehensive list at Dspace.org--> Whos using Dspace--> check image repository. You´ll find some good examples of thumbnails use


2) 70.000 items its a rather medium Dspace installation. You will not have any problems with index searching and probably everithing will be Ok with full-texr searching
