George, You don't specify which version of dspace you are running, but if you open the dspace manual and look for the section "Batch Metadata Editing" you should find the documentation you are looking for.
Additionally, if you export some metadata from your repository using Export Metadata, you will get a csv that will give you a sample specific to your application.
