Hello Peter, I've successfully used the XSL code in your example to add links and icons for syndication feeds in our DSpace 1.7.2 repository. Could you share any CSS that corresponds to the feed elements "ds-feed-option-head" and "ds-feed-option"? I'm not yet well-versed in CSS, but I'm reasonably comfortable modifying existing code.
