Yes, it's a perfectly acceptable architecture transparent to DSpace
(DSpace just doesn't care, all it sees is a directory hierarchy).

Of course the quality depends on quality of the storage technology you
use. Apart from reliability, you need to calculate if it satisifes
bandwith requirements if your repository will be heavily accessed.
