I think the closest class in xmlui to dealing with bitstreams is:
BitstreamReader
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/master/dspace-xmlui/dspace-xmlui-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/xmlui/cocoon/BitstreamReader.java

At about line 312 in that file, is when you've got a successful
match+authorization.
