Thanks for the explanation. However, now that Oracle discontinued the binary release of JRE in favor of OpenJDK 7, I think I'll stick with OpenJDK. It's been in the news all around, I'm sure you noticed, e.g. here http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/java-to-be-removed-from-ubuntu-uninstalled-from-user-machines/ Of course I'll tune the limit of FDs until it works without exhausting them.
