Thanks for the explanation. However, now that Oracle discontinued the
binary release of JRE in favor of OpenJDK 7, I think I'll stick with
OpenJDK. It's been in the news all around, I'm sure you noticed, e.g.

Of course I'll tune the limit of FDs until it works without exhausting them.
