Rahul,

Please see the DSpace Documentation section on "Storage Layer".  It 
describes how DSpace stores files on the filesystem and metadata in the 
database.  DSpace does require enough local storage for both any 
uploaded files and a database for metadata.

DSpace itself runs as a web application, so files are made available via
