Hi Michael, the likely cause is that you only copied the configuration files from 1.7 to 1.8 without adapting them. In 1.8.0, some parts of configuration including authentication are now available as separate configuration files in the [dspace]/config/modules/ directory, see here: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Release+1.8.0+Notes#DSpaceRelease1.8.0Notes-ChangestotheDSpace1.8Upgrade%2FConfigurationProcess Anyway, with every upgrade, it's recommended not to use the old configuration files with new DSpace, but to transfer all your individual changes to the "default" configuration files of the new version.
