My problem was that after mvn package and ant update I manually overwrote the whole xmlui webapp directory with the older version to keep my other customizations. Since the xmlui/WEB-INF/lib/ directory _also_ contains dspace-api-1.8.2.jar and I overwrote it with the version without my plugin, xmlui couldn't find the plugin class.
