That sounds strange. The indexing code is independent from any UI ([dspace]/bin/dspace index-init and [dspace]/bin/dspace index-update). Can you describe what exactly happens when you try to search in XMLUI? BTW if you enabled Discovery, you also need to populate its index by running [dspace]/bin/dspace update-discovery-index.
