I don't have experience with the XML workflow, but I noticed you said you run dspace 1.8.3, however the latest distributed dspace version is 1.8.2. I know this is probably just a typo, but just checking - did you make any DSpace customizations which may have caused the problem? Are both your test and production instances pristine DSpace as distributed or do they differ in what customizations they contain?
