Mark, please, keep in mind that while it's perfectly fine to work on your theme directly in [dspace], you have to remember, that the next time you run mvn package/ant update (e.g. during an upgrade), the new code will be put in [dspace] and your customized templates will be moved to [dspace]/webapps.bak-20120622-093326/xmlui/themes. So just remember to copy them from [dspace] to [dspace-src] before running mvn package or remember where you will can them.
