Well, the simple(?) way would be to run an MTA on any machine that needs to 
send mail, and configure it to forward through the corporate MTA -- this is 
often referred to as a "smarthost" forward.  MTAs exist to queue mail and 
deliver it when they can.  Applications (such as
DSpace) shouldn't need to duplicate them.
