I haven't checked Stack Overflow because I think this still quite a Dspace-specific question (and I presume that the person who developed the External Identifiers feature can answer it quickly and easily). :) In contrast, I presume it would be quite cumbersome to explain and understand the essence of the problem to people who are not familiar with DSpace.
