Hi Ying Jin, if you're reporting a problem, it should be done in our Jira [1]. Otherwise it will easily be forgotten here in the mailing list.
Your description of the problem is pretty good, but you could also offer some suggestions on how you think the problem should be fixed (e.g. introduce a new switch similiar to --replace, that will only update metadata). It's also possible that this behavior is by design and your issue would be closed, but at least you'd learn why it's implemented like that. Moreover, I suggest you to use the Batch Metadata Editor [2] for metadata-only changes. It doesn't have this problem and is very easy to use.
