Hilton, I think they already did. If you look at the release notes, they credit "@mire with the support of the World Bank" for the Discovery functionality. And the improved statistics I mentioned was also contributed by @mire - and looks strikingly similar :) Just look at demo.dspace.org. if you don't have 3.0 installed yet. All in all, all of it is rather easy to do in 3.0.
