Look at the comment in the generated HTML page. It will be something like this: External Metadata URL: cocoon://metadata/handle/123456789/1234/mets.xml?sections=dmdSec,fileSec&fileGrpTypes=THUMBNAIL I can't find right now where that is generated, but the result is exactly what you say: you won't be able to access non-THUMNAIL files from where you are.
