Sorry, I'm not sure what the problem might be. You'll probably need to go through the source to find it. If you discover a bug, please, file it in Jira, but you should also verify that it does also occur in the latest version. Other things you could look at: Try the same thing on DSpace 3.1 at demo.dspace.org. Do .jpg thumbanils work? Do you have webui.browse.thumbnail.maxwidth and webui.browse.thumbnail.maxheight set? Do filtered thumbnails work (when you put an image into ORIGINAL and run filter-media)?
