Hi David, Peter's suggestion looks straightforward, but I'm wondering if you really want to generate the images on the fly instead of storing them. I'd say storing them is still preferable for performance reasons - only, as you said, media filter isn't the right tool for the job. If you wish to look at a more flexible alternative, there are curation tools [1] which let you to any operation on any item, community, collection or the whole site. These could be used to generate the thumbnails and store it into your own bundle. The curation tasks are not even required to be Java classes, they can be in Jython [2], Groovy or JRuby.
