If you search for "solr maximum text field size" there seems to be relevant stuff there. Haven't played with this myself. Try whether it works if you keep the field size under 32k. You can modify the stored values using the Solr HTTP interface, its syntax is easy to grasp and there's a lot of documentation. Don't worry about screwing up by manual intervention, you can then fix it up by running "update-discovery-index -f" or "update-discovery-index -b".
