The greatest criticism I have of DSpace is the difficulty of
installation and upgrade. For the IT team is is big responsibility as
each DSpace instance acrues importance. DSpace is a big product. To get
going isn't too bad but there is a lot to learn and users always want
more.

Having said that the flexibility and features of DSpace have made it
extremely popular at the University of Sydney. We have many instances of
DSpace for different security levels and purposes. Some instances are
apparently a temporary measure until the powers that be identify a
better solution - which never seems to materialise.

Point 1. DSpace comes with a good authorisation system with a variety of
login protocols placing users into groups with a whole criteria set of
access permissions. Also workflow regimes placing new items into
collection on the basis of management authorisations.

Point 2. There is good statistical information that comes with DSpace
but if you want more it is possible to invoke Piwik Analytics and also
Google Analystics, ( if you can possibly ever trust "The Cloud" (which
you can't))

Point 2 With DSpace collections you can define multiple sets of metadata
items relating to object that you store maintaining a collection of
information with meta data about the other collections.

Point 3. Not sure what you want to do but I suspect you would have to
write something in SQl to feed your calendar.

To do the unusual, you need a person skilled in SQL - sounds like you
have that. The relationship of the DSpace tables is mostly represented
in in a schema graphic in the doco but some of the data items that are
keys to other tables are poorly named and its hard to works out what
points to what and thereby write unorthodox scripts.

You can use PHP to access the DSpace tables although I often use Unix
scripts wrapped around a psql command for "one off" data requests and
then later find the "one-off" is suddenly ongoing production and then I
wish I'd used Python.

In my view Option B is the most desirable. Mostly DSpace can be
convinced to perform unusual tasks without change. To me consolidating
your operations into one product make it easier to maintain.
