phpMyAdmin is a front-end for managing MySQL. DSpace does not officially support MySQL, and I can't say whether the combination works properly or ever has. Others have investigated the possibility but I don't know what they found. PostgreSQL costs nothing to acquire, and I find it easy to operate and maintain.
