Hi Gary,
For DSpace 5, Longsight has included an extension to Request a Copy, called
Request a Copy with Helpdesk. In which you have your admin/helpdesk receive
all the messages. It adds two buttons helpdesk contact initial requester
and helpdesk contact the author (which includes the original requesters
message, with an alterable email address, in case the item submitter is not
the item author), and then they route the requests and responses to other
people, using DSpace to push the buttons.

You might be able to apply this to your earlier version of DSpace.
