Depends if you change the tokenizer. I personally would do it and change to OSB 
since it is way, way, way better then the dull tokenizers (aka CHAIN and/or 
WORD). If you use SBPH (I don't think you use that on 3.6.8) then keep the DB.

If you don't change the tokenizer then I would install 3.9.x and reuse the old 
data. Just exchange <3.9.0 with >=3.9.0

Database upgrade is ultra easy. I would be very much surpised to see you having 
issues there (regardless what storage backend you use).
